Well a HPDE is a great idea and at Pocono North is the way to go. Instructors though should have a bit of time under their belt. I am sure Tom and I could scrounge up a few quaified instructors. We have a bit of time on the track, but instructors ----ahhhh [COLOR="blue"]not sure about that.

I am going to have to take exception with the claim that Tom is with Entropy. Entropy Racing Hosts one NASA event a year at Pocono, and services all NASA Northeast, and PDA events but we do NOT certify instructors for any of these events. We have a small staff of instructors all of whom have no less than 100 events under their belt and many years of experience and a proven skill for teaching.
Having said all that i may have met Tom at a NASA event and he may be a fine instructor. I need to clarify that he is not "with Entropy Racing" and I do take exception with the fact that someone who may have instructed at an event that I was involved with has included himself in my staff.
I don't wish to seem negative or difficult, but Entropy Racing provides a myriad of motorsports services including professionial coaching and instruction and i will not abide someone I don't know helping himself to my professional reputation.

Well ouch looks like you might be wrong Tom. Yes the wifey has me tied down, even a leg lock too(I like it like that  ) but I couldn't have been too far off with that reply from Charlie at Entropy.
Kind of puts a few holes in your "black card" huh.:D :D :D :D :D :D

To put this discussion to bed...
Tom DID represent himself as an Entropy Racing Instructor on this forum board, and there is a very good reason why I need to clarify that he is not.
Entropy Racing is a business that I have spent the past 15 years building into a successful roadracing provider. we provide safety staff, Prep, Car rentals and improtant to this discussion, professional instruction.
Anyone using our name MUST be associated with us officially or we are forced to set the record straight.
I have no Idea why Tom chose to list himself as one of our staff instructors but I must make the correction.
I am in no way suggesting that he is, or is not, a good instructor, just that he is not one of mine.
good luck with your event plans, and if there is any professional services we can provide feel free to contact us at our shop.

he said he is qualified to instruct...perhaps he got certification from you guys in previous years?
I think that is all he meant..
wow, what a way to blow things out of proportion....like any of us give a damn either way....this is a small forum anyway, relax

Charlie, we respect and value your input.. but, I will wait till Tom responds and see what he has to say. From my talks with him about setting up a track event, he never mentioned Entropy.
We do plan on doing a track event, maybe you can point us to the right direction? Open track days/events? Fees? Etc.
Thank you.

Its amazing .... "with" and "for".....must be careful on use...
I did mention I ran with entropy at a nasa event. just to clarify, And I did ride in a car at the event to "aid" a less experiance driver. We will not use the word instructor, because , as charlie pointed out this could possibly cause him grief.
Apparently my credentials were good enough at the time, based on my logbook entries I had as proof. But I digress. I will not blow this any further out of proportion.

Hi Guys, Peter asked me to post some information on here abotu drivers education. I think it will be educational and informative and will close out this thread.
First, who I am. I am friends with both Peter (Petris25) and Tom (MYIS300T). I have participated in Autocross', HPDE's, as well as racing schools and club racing for 6 years and logged over 10,000 track miles. I am primarily affiliated with the Metro NY chapter of the Porsche Club of America. I have worked my way up from a provisional instructor, to a local (Metro NY region) instructor, to a Nationally certified instructor with the PCA. A four year process involving numerous classroom and on track programs.
While I have participated in Entropy's racing school and NASA HPDE as a guest instructor, I am not intimately familiar with their procedures and protocols for becoming an instructor and as such will not comment on them. Similiarly, while I am friends with Tom and Pete, I have not been out on the track with them in a DE environment and as such will not comment on their ability as a driver or instructor. Even if I had, it would not be appropriate in a public forum such as this. Moving on...
Drivers Education 'DE' or High Performance Drivers Education 'HPDE' are excellent educational programs that can benefit drivers looking to improve their skill set. There are a variety of organization that offer these programs with varying levels of sophistication. PCA, in which I participate, is one of the more advanced holding hundreds of events a year across the country. The downside is most PCA programs are marquee specific and as such you or even I can't drive an IS300 or anything non Porsche in them. There are also local or smaller clubs such as NASA www.nasaproracing.com and EMRA www.emraracing.org that run programs that are open to all.
You will notice that both of these include 'racing' in their website as both and most organizations that host these events also host racing events. This opens up the case on insurance. Contrary to some of the posts here, your standard automotive collision policy will most likely (90%) NOT cover an accident at a DE. If you read the fine print, most exclude any accident 'at, on, or in the proximity or a rack course or track' and most also exclude anything that could remotely be construed as 'preperation for racing or any timed event or speed challenge'. Keep in mind the insurance companies have hundreds of lawyers on staff and you and me are nobodies. If anyone has any doubt, contact me privately and I will put you in touch with people that have wrecked their cars and they are not fixed because they are denied insurance.
This brings us to how safe these events are. Driving at speeds over 100 mph is dangerous. My car, which is used exclusively for these events has a full roll cage, a special FIA approved racing seat, 6 point harnesses and a seat back brace. I wear a 3 layer fire suit, nomex gloves and shoes, nomex socks and undershirt, a nomex lined SA approved helmet and a HANS device. On average I have seen 1 car wrecked per day I have been at a DE event. Lets run those odds, 1 in 50 to 100 cars will not come home! I have spun my car and damaged it. A minor spin in which I did not contact another car or wall cost me $10,000.00 to repair. I would be very cautious doing one of these events in the car you need to get to work or school in. This is serious stuff. I have seen cars burn and thankfully have not witnessed, but on average once per year, someone is killed at one of these events. Not to say they are not fun and beneficial, but understand the risks.
With this level of risk, neither Tom, nor myself or any one person can organizae and run an event anymore. I would suggest anyone considering these events join (become a member) in one of the organizations discussed here and actively participate in that club, not just go to the events, but get involved and help out. It takes alot to run these events. There are other options too....
Tom, Pete and myself all got our start in autocross. Locally, SCCA, BMWCCA, MNYPCA and many other organizations run autocross events. These are timed low speed car control events. You manuever you car in and out of a series of 'gates' which are comprised of 12" cones as fast as you can without hitting a cone or missing a gate and the one with the best time wins. They are a blast, I still do them myself, and the most fun you can have under 60 mph. Trust me it feels like 160mph weaving the car back and forth so hard. You can push you car and even spin it in a safe controlled environment.
I hope this helps some of you better understand the risks and rewards of high performance driving events and I look forward to seeing some of you at these events next year. If anyone has any questions or would like web site links or anything else, please feel free to email me at testdrv321@aol.com Thanks again, and be safe out there.
