So I was given the opportunity to either intern as a beginer tech for BMW, or intern for a porsche race team. Which do you think I should take?

thats the thing though...

I'm unsure of what i want to do for the future... If I was to shoot for becoming a shop manager position at a dealership I would take the BMW tech position. But if I want to open up my own shop one day (whether performance or maintenence) i'de love to take internship @ the porsche race team. Both are great choices just wondering if you guys can help weigh the positives with negatives for me.

wow thats a damn hard discision to make......shit i really wouldn't know wat to do. Well the porsche race team is like a dream come true for some people. Its a chance that you might not get again. But managing a shop whether it be bmw, mercedes or whatever, you could always try to get into one of those shops later. Pluse having Porsche on your resume looks pretty good i would say.

Not a hard decision at all. Take the bmw job. Its the responsible move. Race team is great. Lots of glory. Also look at the bad side. Your married. I'm sure you want kids. Race team you'll work 70+ hours a week, and travel all year. I'm sure the marriage wouldn't last that long. And not good for a parent.

Then look at bmw. Incredibly well paid staff. Set hours. Stability. Among some of the few bad things here are the repitituion. But at the same time that could be a good thing. Plus 5 years under your belt at bmw could lead to other incredible oppurtunities.

Pete, if it were me, I'd take the Porsche Race Team Internship. BMW techs are a dime a dozen, but if you want to open your own shop you will have the prestige of saying... "I was on the Porsche race team, and I left to open my own shop"

Sounds a bit nicer than - "I left Larchmont BMW to open my own shop"

You will learn much more on a Porsche team that will be a better investment in the long term career goal.

Intern BMW tech = 5,000 and 10,000 mile service guy. (oil changes all day :( )

one of the down side about the BMW job is that, i dont think BMW is doing so well (jn terms quality and sales)? however, i am still for the dealership job because you will also have access and the opportunity to learn how other parts of the dealership operates and etc

yes, of course the racing team experience will sound and look nice on your resume, but at the end, its really what you will be able to extract and learn from the internship itself.

i am sure you will be able to learn something from both internships, but you got to ask yourself what you want in the future and see which one will fit you better.

good luck.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. From talking to people working in the dealerships they're telling me ur basically kissing the service writers ass to get the good jobs. I'm kinda leaning on interning for the porsche team cause I would love to open up my own shop one day. And who knows maybe I'll love it and stay with them.

what exactly would you be doing for the porche team? what kind of racing is it? where? for how long of a period? just a summer thing?

any pay compensation for either job?

The owner of the shop basically told me I'd be in the shop learning the ropes of wrenching/tuning/maintenence on porsche street/track (911's, 944's, 966's, carrera's, etc.). Just basically go and take in (learn). As for pay its not much but I'm more there to learn then anything else.

Ps Marc they work on motec's all day long =)

well, that does sound interesting I guess....is it close by to where you live? how much travelling involved to races (assuming in CT/limerock)? and how long is the internship for? where are they located? certainly important factors to consider in your decision...

yup, my ex tuner George drove and tuned porche track cars for years...those german cars sure love those MoTeC's....

I have a few buddies that work over in Morristown(technically convent station) at Ryan's Morristown BMW. It happens to be one of the most productive Beamer dealerships, so in a scenario like that, I've thought of going over there myself. The upside of everything is 1)You will get good pay, and guaranteed hours in case things are slow 2) They will send you to school, and if you take full advantage, within 5 years or so you can become a master tech for BMW making over the 100,000/year salary.
The downsides are 1)You'll only learn mostly to work on BMW motors, which, in the nitty-gritty, boils down to a ton of computer work/diagnosis-they are highly reputable for being able to mechanically take a beating, but they're computers don't last quite as long. 2)In the scenario where you would become a master tech, at that point you would most likely have to move to a different shop where a master tech is retiring or there is a need for that position, because they staff x amount of C techs(LOF'ers, installers), x B techs(most engine repairs and maintenance), and only 1, maybe 2, master techs.

Just because I'm the type to make my decisions on what would make me happy alone, I personally would probably go for the porsche internship, and see what I can make of it. Even if it doesn't work out sooner or later, BMW will always be there, and they usually are hiring.....follow your heart 'grasshopper.'
